Hardening Off Your Plants

Updated: Apr 20

If your plants have been living inside or in a greenhouse, they will need to gradually get used to the sun. Putting them out on a sunny day will cause leaf burn and stunt your plant, potentially even killing it if it's bad enough.

Getting them used to the outside elements is the process known as hardening off. To do this, bring your plants outside into the sun and monitor how they respond. Depending on sun/heat intensity, damage can happening within 15 minutes. Feel free to bring them them in once they start to show signs of stress or after about 30 minutes, whichever comes first.

It is best to do this earlier in the day, if possible, when the sun is less intense.

Do this again the next day but for twice as long as the first day. Keep doubling the time each day until they can take the elements.

Depending on your weather, you may be able to harden them off in as little as 2 days, but will likely take 3-6 days.
